Is Apple's Safari becoming a content zoo?
Apple intends to update Safari with an ad-blocker and a text summarisation tool. This tool, being called a "web eraser" will strip out adverts and use an AI function to reduce text to a summary. It's also persistent, meaning once a page is so stripped, all future sessions will follow the rule. There has of course been zero consultation with media organisations.

Google is building its own walled garden
We've written about Google's 2024 I/O, and so has Ricky Sutton. He's been consistently correct about the direction the company is heading with content. As he puts it, "My first question in AI Overviews will be: 'Hey Google, how do you suggest content creators fund themselves if they can no longer rely on traffic from search or advertising from Google?'"

Project Liberty wants to take over TikTok
Frank McCourt, better known as the billionaire former owner of the LA Dodgers baseball team, is heading up a consortium called Project Liberty that wants to buy TikTok from Chinese owner Bytedance. Under a law signed by President Biden, Bytedance has until January 2025 to divest itself of the social platform. McCourt's bid group contains luminaries such as Sir Tim Berners-Lee, so it appears it's not just an attempt to own a cash-cow.
