Hybrid CMS vs headless CMS: the difference in one line

A headless CMS gives developers maximum flexibility and expects them to build the presentation layer. A hybrid CMS keeps that flexibility but adds editor-facing tools, so content teams can preview, edit, and publish without waiting on development.

Monolithic CMS: the starting point

A monolithic CMS ties content and presentation together in one system. Users often log into the website itself to access the CMS, so the two are inextricably linked. This coincided with the explosive growth in self-managed websites, and back when a CMS only had to control a small website, it was enough. Being easy to use and making sites intuitive to control was a real plus, but the downsides grew over time.

Headless CMS: the new normal

A headless CMS separates the stored content (the "body"), the databases of words, images, videos, and data, from the presentation layer where content is viewed, also known as the front-end (the "head"). This contrasts with the older monolithic CMS, where content and site are tightly interwoven. What to look for in a headless CMS:

  • API-driven: Content is fed to any platform or device, including websites, mobile apps, newsletters, and IoT devices through APIs. Each channel is a consumer of content: the CMS manages content and mark it up so that every device or channel is able to use it correctly.
  • Flexibility: Developers can use their preferred front-end frameworks (e.g. React, Angular, Vue) without being forced into choosing something purely because the CMS uses it.
  • Scalability: Separating chaneither sinnel and CMS lets the two sides scale independently. A headless CMS with a few users can connect to a site with gigantic audiences, and neithr side will suffer drawbacks. There's no need to over-spec the CMS so it can keep up with a busy site, or vice versa, keeping costs in check.
